Family insurance

As an insured person of ZF BKK, you can generally insure your family members free of charge. This means: one contribution, many benefits - for you and your loved ones, as long as you do not have your own primary insurance.

Who is also insured?

Family insurance includes

  • Spouses and civil partners (in accordance with the Civil Partnership Act)
  • Your own and adopted children
  • Stepchildren and grandchildren if you are mainly responsible for their upkeep or they live with you in the same household
  • Foster children (provided they are not being cared for professionally)

Requirements for free co-insurance

For spouses and life partners

Your partner can be covered by family insurance if:

  • there is no full-time self-employment
  • there is no statutory insurance obligation
  • the total regular income in 2025 is less than € 535.00 or
  • no more than € 556.00 per month is earned in marginal employment

For children

Children are insured free of charge:

  • up to the age of 23 if they are not gainfully employed
  • up to the age of 25 if they are in school, vocational training or university education

Periods of voluntary service, military or civilian service can extend the co-insurance.

Children with disabilities are covered by family insurance for an unlimited period of time - provided the disability existed when they were still entitled to family insurance.

Application for family insurance

Observe income limits

The following applies to co-insured relatives:

  • For income from capital or self-employment:
    Maximum € 535.00 per month (2025)
  • For mini-jobs:
up to € 556.00 per month

If this limit is exceeded, the non-contributory family insurance ends. Please inform us promptly of any change in income - this helps to avoid interruptions.

Special regulations

If one parent is privately insured or the child is a stepchild or grandchild, we will check the eligibility requirements individually. For example, children can only be co-insured free of charge if

  • the income of the privately insured partner does not exceed €6,150.00 per month in 2025 or
  • your own income is higher than that of the privately insured parent

Voluntary Social Year (FSJ)

  • With remuneration: You are compulsorily insured - the employer pays the contributions.
  • Without pay: Family insurance remains in place as long as you have not yet reached the age of 25.

Family insurance ends? No problem.

If the co-insurance ends - for example by taking up employment - the relative can insure themselves directly with ZF BKK. You can find more information on this under "Become a member".

Annual audit - please help

As a statutory health insurance company, we are obliged to check your family insurance once a year. When the time comes, you will receive a letter from us with a personal access code.

Please complete the online questionnaire within 10 days - even if nothing has changed. This will keep your data up to date - and ensure that your family is fully protected.
