Good to know - your insurance cover
If you have met all the requirements for pensioners' health insurance, you are entitled to insurance as a pension applicant from the time you apply for a pension. As a rule, you are still insured through employment at this time. The insurance remains in place until your employer deregisters you. From the following day, you will automatically be insured as a pension claimant or pensioner.
You have fulfilled the requirements for health insurance for pensioners if you were insured with a statutory health insurance scheme for almost all of your working life. In addition to the insurance periods, periods of child-raising have also been taken into account since 01.08.2017. A lump sum of 3 years is credited for each biological child, adopted child, stepchild and foster child.
Good to know - your contributions
You pay the general contribution rate of 18.00% from your pension and pension payments and the reduced contribution rate of 17.40% for all other income. The rates stated include the individual contribution rate.
As a compulsorily insured pensioner, the following income is subject to contributions:
- the statutory pension
- so-called pension income (e.g. company pensions, pensions, life insurance from direct insurance)
- Income from part-time self-employment
- foreign statutory pensions
We require a declaration of income so that we can calculate your contributions correctly.
If your income from pensions and part-time self-employment is less than the total amount of €16.75, your income is deemed to be marginal and no contributions need to be paid. If this amount is exceeded, it is considered a tax-free amount for health insurance purposes. Income above €5,512.50 per month is no longer taken into account.
Voluntarily insured pensioners pay contributions from all income used for living expenses. In addition to the above-mentioned income, this also includes profits from capital assets or income from letting and leasing.
If you are compulsorily insured as a pensioner, you will not have to pay any further contributions as a result of the €556.00 job. If you are voluntarily insured as a pensioner, your income will be taken into account for long-term care insurance contributions. No contributions need to be paid for health insurance in this case either.
If you are employed and receive a pension at the same time, you are primarily insured through your employment. However, contributions are levied from both the employment and the pension. This does not put you at a disadvantage. If you pay contributions totaling more than €5,512.50 per month, we will refund you the excess contributions paid.
Payment of contributions
If you are compulsorily insured as a pensioner, the contributions from your statutory pension are paid directly to us by the pension insurance provider. Voluntarily insured pensioners pay their contributions in full to us themselves. In most cases, contributions from pension payments are paid directly to us by the paying agency. Only in individual cases do you have to transfer the contributions to us directly (we will inform you of this in good time).
You pay the contributions for foreign pensions and part-time self-employment to us yourself.
