Good to know—your insurance coverage
If you have met all the requirements for health insurance for pensioners, you are entitled to insurance as a pension applicant from the date you apply for your pension. As a rule, you will still be insured through your employment at this point. The insurance will remain in place until your employer deregisters you. From the following day, you will automatically be insured as a pension applicant or pensioner.
You have fulfilled the requirements for health insurance for pensioners if you were insured with a statutory health insurance fund for almost the entire duration of your working life. In addition to the insurance periods, since August 1, 2017, periods of child-rearing have also been taken into account. Here, a flat rate of 3 years is credited for each biological child, adopted child, stepchild, and foster child.
Good to know—your contributions
You pay the standard contribution rate of 18.00% on your pension and retirement benefits and the reduced contribution rate of 17.40% on all other income. The rates quoted include the individual health insurance contribution rate.
As a pensioner with compulsory insurance, the following income is subject to contributions:
- the statutory pension
- so-called pension payments (e.g., company pensions, pensions, life insurance from direct insurance)
- Income from part-time self-employment
- Foreign statutory pensions
In order for us to calculate your contributions correctly, we require a declaration of income.
If your income from pension payments and part-time self-employment is less than €197.75 in total, your income is considered negligible and no contributions need to be paid. If this amount is exceeded, it is considered an allowance in health insurance. Income above €5,812.50 per month is no longer taken into account.
Voluntarily insured pensioners pay contributions based on their total income used to cover living expenses. In addition to the above-mentioned income, this also includes profits from capital assets or income from renting and leasing.
If you are compulsorily insured as a pensioner, you will not have to pay any additional contributions for the €603.00 job. If you are voluntarily insured as a pensioner, your income will be taken into account for nursing care insurance contributions. No contributions need to be paid for health insurance in this case either.
If you are employed and also receive a pension, you are primarily insured through your employment. However, contributions are levied on both your employment and your pension. This does not result in any disadvantage for you. If you pay a total of more than €5,812.50 in contributions per month, we will refund the excess contributions you have paid.
Payment of contributions
If you are compulsorily insured as a pensioner, the contributions from the statutory pension are paid directly to us by the pension insurance institution. Voluntarily insured pensioners pay their contributions in full to us themselves. In most cases, contributions from pension payments are paid directly to us by the paying agent. Only in individual cases do you have to transfer the contributions to us directly (we will inform you of this in good time).
You pay the contributions for foreign pensions and part-time self-employment to us yourself.
