How you can insure yourself during your studies
Family insurance
Until the end of your 25th year, you can remain covered by your parents' family insurance without having to pay contributions. If you have completed military service or statutory voluntary service, your family insurance will be extended by the period of service even after the age of 25.
Health insurance for students
As long as you are enrolled at a state or state-recognized university, you can insure yourself at low premiums - with full entitlement to benefits. The insurance begins at the earliest on the day of enrollment, at the latest at the start of the semester. When you finish your studies, your student health insurance will continue until the end of the semester.
Contribution rate
- Health insurance: 116.45 euros per month
- Nursing care insurance: 30.78 euros with children / 35.91 euros without children
Contribution subsidy
If you receive BAföG, you can receive a subsidy for health and long-term care insurance from the Amt für Ausbildungsförderung.

Voluntary health insurance
If you are over 30, you can continue your membership with ZF BKK - as a voluntarily insured person or as a voluntarily insured person. Your insurance status will change, but you will continue to be well looked after. Please contact us, we will be happy to advise you.

Yes, the reasons for extending health insurance for students are as follows:
- Illness
- disability
- Birth of a child
- Caring for a disabled or sick relative
- Employee on the board of the university
- Non-admission to studies
- Basic military/civilian service

- Federal Voluntary Service (BFD)
- Comparable recognized voluntary services (e.g. International Youth Volunteer Service)

Legislation stipulates a co-payment for certain services - the so-called co-payment. This applies to all insured persons aged 18 and over. However, nobody should be financially overburdened by co-payments. For this reason, you can be exempted from further co-payments under certain conditions. You can find out more here.
How the insurance is structured depends on the number of hours per week, the amount of your income and the duration of your employment. If you would like more detailed information, please contact us.
Mini job
You may earn up to € 556.00 per month, the number of hours is irrelevant.
Short-term employment
You remain insured as a student if your employment is limited from the outset to a maximum of 3 months (70 working days) per year.
Working students
You remain insured as a student, regardless of how much you earn, but you may not work more than 20 hours a week.
Please note that your earnings may affect your non-contributory family insurance if your monthly salary exceeds the limit of €535.00. Let us advise you in advance.
Other special cases
Orphan's pension
If you receive an orphan's pension, you are insured on a non-contributory basis as an orphan's pensioner until you reach the age of 25. This can be extended by a maximum of 12 months if you have completed civilian, military or voluntary service. After that, your insurance will be converted to student insurance.
Dual study program
As a student at a cooperative university, you are subject to compulsory insurance as an employee.
