Contribution rate – what you need to know

If you are an employee subject to compulsory insurance, you pay health insurance contributions from your gross salary. Half of the contributions are paid by you and half by your employer.

If you are voluntarily insured – for example, because your income exceeds the annual income limit – only the income up to the contribution assessment ceiling is subject to contributions.

An overview of current contribution rates and assessment thresholds can be found here: Contribution rates & assessment thresholds | Contributions for employees

If you take up employment that is subject to social insurance contributions, you must register with a statutory health insurance fund. Any previous family or private insurance will automatically end. ZF BKK will issue you with a membership certificate, which must be submitted to your employer no later than two weeks after you start work.

You can only switch back if you become subject to compulsory insurance. This is the case if your gross income is between €603.01 and €6,450.00 per month. People over the age of 55 or who are exempt from compulsory insurance are excluded.

If you regularly earn between €603.01 and €2,000.00 per month, your employment relationship is considered a midi job. You pay reduced contributions but are fully covered by social security.

Mini-jobs (up to €603.00) and short-term jobs (up to 3 months or 70 working days per year) are exempt from insurance. Health insurance must be obtained through other means, such as family insurance or voluntary insurance.

If your regular annual income exceeds €77,400.00, you are no longer required to have insurance. You can then take out voluntary insurance with ZF BKK. In certain cases, a different limit of €69,750.00 applies.

Employees who are subject to compulsory insurance remain insured without having to pay contributions during parental leave – with full entitlement to benefits. Voluntarily insured persons are only covered without having to pay contributions if their spouse is covered by statutory insurance.

In the case of unpaid leave of less than one month, the insurance remains in force. If it lasts longer, the compulsory insurance ends. Depending on the family situation, family or voluntary insurance may be necessary.
