Who receives maternity benefit?
If you are working at the start of the maternity protection period - i.e. 6 weeks before the birth - we will pay you maternity benefit of up to €13 per calendar day. If your net pay is higher than this, your employer will pay the difference as a supplement.
Even if you are not in a traditional employment relationship, you may be entitled to maternity benefit:
- Unemployed women receive maternity benefit in the amount of their unemployment benefit.
- Women who are entitled to sickness benefit, e.g. self-employed or voluntarily insured, receive maternity benefit in the amount of their sickness benefit.
- Women in marginal employment who are covered by family insurance can apply for maternity benefit from the Federal Social Security Office - up to €210(overview - www.bundesamtsozialesicherung.de ).

How long is maternity benefit paid?
- 6 weeks before the birth
- 8 weeks after the birth
- 12 weeks after birth in the case of premature births, multiple births or children with disabilities
- If you give birth prematurely, your entitlement is extended by the shortened period before the birth.
You are always entitled to a total maternity benefit period of at least 14 weeks.
